US: How Bad is The Stupak Anti-Abortion Amendment in Congress?
From the Washington Post, as relayed via DailyKOS.

"Because of the limits placed on the exchanges, most of the participants will have some form of premium credit or affordable subsidy. That means most will be ineligible for abortion coverage. The idea that people are going to go out and purchase separate "abortion plans" is both cruel and laughable. If this amendment passes, it will mean that virtually all women with insurance through the exchange who find themselves in the unwanted and unexpected position of needing to terminate a pregnancy will not have coverage for the procedure. Abortion coverage will not be outlawed in this country. It will simply be tiered, reserved for those rich enough to afford insurance themselves or lucky enough to receive from their employers."

The amendment is expected to pass with relative ease. Republicans will join with anti-choice Democrats to push it over the finish line. Once the amendment passes, the bill is cleared for a vote, and all parties expect that vote to succeed. Today looks likely to end with a historic, and important, vote. A vote that is a first step towards helping more than 30 million people secure health-care coverage, and making sure hundreds of millions are better protected from the vagaries of the insurance industry. But Stupak's amendment is a bitter start. It is, however, not the end. Even if it muscles into the House bill, it will also have to pass in the Senate, and then survive conference, before it becomes law.

My note: Even the most ardent, supposed "feminist" politicians have stated they are willing to vote to allow this amendment to stand, as long as they can pass the reform today.

This is PATHETIC. And we have a Democratic majority in both the House and Senate who can't seem to buck up and get a spine, so I dunno folks. What do YOU think is the best way to deal with this grassroots style?

    Just wondering...
This is a question for women who take any form of birth control and currently have health insurance.  Does anyone's health insurance NOT cover birth control the same way they cover other prescriptions?  I was under the impression that insurance companies had to cover birth control but I can't find any evidence that this is true on a federal level.  I know that some states have this law but what I don't know is if there are states that allow insurance companies to deny birth control.

    Emergency Tooth help!
So, part of my front canine tooth just came off in my mouth. I wasn't even eating anything hard or sticky or anything. Ack!

I don't think it got down to the pulp or anything - I swished some water and it doesn't hurt, but I'm worried about more of the tooth breaking.

Is there anything I can put in the hole (it seems it's just part of the back and the "veneer" of the tooth is stiff there. I obviously don't want the rest to break off until I can get to a dentist and have it fixed.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest

We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. RSS feeds again

We thank you for your patience.

    Swollen feet
Hey there - so I've felt that my feet are swollen for about a week now. Has this been happening to anyone else? Is it the drastic change of New York City weather that could've brought this on? I don't think I'm pregnant, I've only had sex once since my last period, with a condom, and I'm on the pill. I AM PMSing this week, but I felt like it may have started last week.

Is there anything I can do to get the excess water weight out of my body, and more specifically my feet? Thanks!

    Not new to surgery....
Hello fellow women,  it seems I have a diliema.  I basically tore my knee cap off and it is just floating in midspace in my knee.  I went to the emergency room and they couldn't quite wonder what was wrong with it until I went to my Orthopaedics the following Monday.  He found the problem right there.  He said I was going to need reconstructive surgery in my knee cap.  He said they are going to try to use this experimental putty that helps grow new cartilidge.  I won't be walking any time soon and need constant care around the clock in getting food and other things not being able to walk.  I don't have a wheel chair around the house, I have crutches.  My question was if I wanted one of those short term services to be around me at hours of the day to do cooking, cleaning and other stuff but I just didn't want a stranger,  I wanted my family member but I wanted them to get paid for it.  Would anyone know how I would go about doing that?  It looks like I'll be out for a very long time.  I don't think I'll be walking or hobbling for two months it seems or more.  I'm bed bound now so I just wonder how I would go about doing this?

    chest pulsating
I sometimes get this pulsating feeling in my chest, on the left side/middle. You can really feel it. It feels as if someone is poking a pen repeatedly inside me. I can feel it moving when I'm still, and if I put pressure on it it's like kicking? My SO can even feel it really well. It's visible too... it usually happens when I'm not doing anything at all. Any idea what this could be? I have no health insurance, so going to the doctor isn't an option right now... when I was a baby I was born with a slight 'hole' in my heart, and had a mur mur. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

So because of the H1N1 paranoia in my town you can't spit in my office without hitting a bottle of hand sanitizer. Not only that, but the staff is all over it. Whatever brand it is that the office buys is pretty nasty-smelling. I am prone to migraines, and one of the main triggers is smells (perfume and chemical cleaners are big ones).

    Question the first:
How likely is it the hand sanitizer is causing my headaches? I often feel a headache coming on after getting a good whiff of the stuff (I don't use it myself).

    Question the second:
How can I limit my exposure? I work with a lot of germophobes so I don't think asking them to discontinue its use will really fly.

    my fiance...
ok, so being as this is regarding my fiance, it's obviously not female related, but i'm hoping someone on here may be able to help. he came home from work after only an hour with these symptoms:
    SEVERE stomach ache
    cramping feeling in his stomach
    nausea
    numb/tingly feeling in his arms
    low body temp (93.4 F)
all these came in waves. i asked him to rate his pain on the 1-10 scale, and he rated as high as a 15 when the wave was hitting, and as low as a 2 when they weren't, if that makes any sense. he is not the type of person to complain of pain or sickness often, which adds to my concern. i did a symptom check on webmd and didn't get anything that really made sense. he says the whole thing was really sudden, he went to work, ate a banana on the way and had a day (or two) old donut when he got there. he drank some water after, and says that's when the pain started. i'm really concerned that this could be something serious, but he doesn't want to go to the hospital. walking helps him, and being outside in the cool air helps him. but when he got home, he laid on the bed, moaning and clenching his muscles in pain. what do i do? does this sound contagious? what should i watch out for that would signify increasing severity? any advice at all?

This is not a woman problem, but an ongoing problem in my life for the past few years.

I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction, or give me advice.  My brother is an alcoholic, has been for years now.  He has made a massive impact on my family life with my parents especially.  Hes 27 and will not admit it.  He seems to be getting worse lately, we called the police out on him on 2 occasions in a week because he was threatening to burn our house down and threatening my mum and dad, being abusive, throwing bricks at the house etc.  Even when the police caught him he put up a fight and they had to call for back up.  Anyway, we kicked him out and havent heard from him since.

However last week we heard from someone that he'd been in a fight, was covered in blood and was standing in the middle of the road shouting "come on bring it" at ongoing cars.  He's quite known to do this when he's had a drink which is most of the time.

Basically we've finally decided that tough love is the best option in order for him to hopefully realise what he is doing to himself.  He is a risk to himself and to others and my parents are seriously considering getting him sectioned.  We've asked the police before and they tell us it has to be with his consent.  And today I called my doctors and they said he has to have been reviewed recently in order for them to do this.  This is disappointing.  He refuses to speak to anyone about this, and will ignore any advice.

We're just at a loss on what to do next.. and Im hoping that someone who has been in the same situation could give me some advice please?

    vaccines and drinking
Does anybody know anything about drinking alcohol / abstaining from it after receiving vaccinations? A friend of mine was told she shouldn't drink because she just got vaccines in preparation for a trip to south korea ... but today is her birthday! Harsh! She's thinking of just assuming that it's a precautionary measure that they tell everybody and drinking anyway. Does anybody have any scary reasons why that's not a good idea? I think the vaccines she got were typhoid and hep A and/or B.

    Treadmill
    Hey everyone,

I've been working out on the old, rickety treadmill in my dorm (it works, but really only to the extent of faster or slower lol). I would like to know the best way to maximize my workouts, to get fit and lose a couple pounds. FYI, I am 21 years old, 150 pounds, 5 foot 4 inches. Also, what foods should I avoid (aside from the obvious bad carbs, high sugar foods) and which ones should I go for?

To quote Justine Caines, Founding Member of whatwomenwant.org.au:

"We have just (and yes I mean in the last 24 hours) been advised that Nicola Roxon will put amendments to the midwifery legislation that will REQUIRE a midwife claiming Medicare to work WITH either an Obstetrician or GP. Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

    ---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

    tech details )

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D

LiveJournal Major Notes: Search super-tweak, postcards, and amazing user content!

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

    Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

    Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

    Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
    1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
    2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
    3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
    4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
    5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
    6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
    7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
    8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
    9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
    10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.

    Weird Thing

So, I have been doing some research. I have a really weird "hymen" problem! I think I once had a Septate Hymen. Where there is still a band of hymen tissue connected down the middle, because when I was younger I always used to get tampons stuck on it. Now I think that it has broken. For the past almost year I have had these two pieces of tissue, that have no feeling that I can see in my vagina, and when my boyfriend fingers me they like come out! It's so embarrassing.

Am I alone with this? Does anyone know how to get rid of them?

    Thnx!

    bra fitting
I've lost some weight and well my bras don't really fit very well anymore plus they are getting old.
I've never had a bra fitting and well I'm not exactly sure how I came about the size i wear. probably started with some standard training bra and just increased cup size as I got bigger and band size as I got wider. I tend to grab a 36C and it works, but I'd like an accurate measurement and measuring myself never seems to come out right.

So my question is a little weird, but I'm shy/self-conscious and these things make me nervous....
If I was to go in for a bra fitting, what exactly does that entail? I'm probably not going to VS because although their bras are cute, I can't afford to get a bunch of bras from them.

    Anti-histamines and depression / anxiety
So, I think I've noticed a pattern with myself.

Every time I take something like Tylenol PM or an anti-histamine, I am depressed and BLAH feeling the next day.

This past weekend I took some alka-seltzer Saturday night, and Sunday I'm pretty sure it brought on a anxiety attack of sorts - I cried and cried and questioned my (other wise good) relationship with my boyfriend. I was even on the verge of breaking up with him.

At the time I didn't really recognize the connection, but by Monday I felt fine and like I was no longer depressed and I thought back to taking the meds Saturday night and put the 2 together.

    Does anyone else experience this?
If so, do you already have an underlying depression / anxiety problem?

I did a google search and it appears that other people have had the same questions, though a couple I found dealt with people that already have anxiety issues (which I don't think I have, though this is making me question it.)

Oh, and apparently some anti-histamines and prozac are actually the same drug???

    Need some advice.
So the back story is.... I have had blood pressure issues for several yrs.  Been on meds that keep it under control.  I do have times at work when I am inundated with noise.  My boss loves to decorate for the holidays and for about a month now we have had the Halloween stuff out.  Most of it is just fine but she has brought in to the office three inflatables that should be out on the lawn.  She brought them to work because she no longer has a lawn to put them on.  I have been working for her for aver 5 yrs and we have a good relationship.

I figured out today that all the sound in the office has been causing me stress that I did not realize was there.  I took my blood pressure shortly after my boss left and I was shocked by the number (164/105).  High enough that I could end up in the hospital should my Dr. ever see them.  about 30 minutes later I took it again and it had come down to 143/94.  The only difference was the inflatables were turned off.   I was still doing my work (which it typing all day).

Where I need help, how do I tell her that the inflatables have to go and never come back while I am working there?    I know I can show her the readout on the monitor but what do I say?   "I love the decorations but they could be hurting me and this is why.......and you won't be paying the hospital bill."

Can anyone give me a good place to start?
